Match Up: Despite cheating allegations involving deflated footballs, New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick passed legendary Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry for the most playoff wins in NFL history to earn another trip for his team to the Super Bowl. Super Bowl XLIX matches each conference's top seed for the second consecutive year as the defending champion Seahawks represent the NFC in going up against the AFC champion Patriots on February 1 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. This will be New England's eighth Super Bowl appearance (3-4) while Seattle is in its third title game (1-1).
Never doubt the resilience of the Seattle Seahawks. Plagued by turnovers and outplayed much of Sunday by Green Bay, the Seahawks staged an improbable comeback and beat the Packers 28-22 in overtime. Russell Wilson, who struggled until the final minutes, hit Jermaine Kearse for a 35-yard touchdown 3:19 into the extra period on the only possession. Seattle will now have a shot at back-to-back championships in Superbowl XLIX.
The New England Patriots had a much easier game to advance. Tom Brady came off the field and enjoyed a hug with Bill Belichick, up 45-7 with just over three minutes remaining in the AFC championship game, with rain and cheers falling down in equal shares at Gillette Stadium. Together, the duo will be heading to — amazingly — their sixth Super Bowl as quarterback and coach. The Patriots beat the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday by that same score and will face the Seattle Seahawks on Feb. 1, gunning for their fourth title together. |
